Volunteer Opportunities
Conversation Partners
Residents who would like to speak with English speakers to improve their language skills will be matched with a suitable partner. Conversations are guided by the interests of the partners. Various icebreaker and conversation prompts are available. The focus is on improving language skills in a comfortable setting.
Time commitment of 1-2 hours per week.
Homework Help
Basic homework help is provided by volunteers to assist children in grades 1-8 who are living at the shelter. This program provides homework support primarily to children whose first language is not English. Referrals to tutors will be on an as needed basis.
Time commitment of 1-2 hours per week.
Community Assistance
Volunteers for community assistance spend time with residents out in the community to acquaint people with Canadian life and culture. Community assistance may include help finding culturally appropriate food, introduction to Canadian food, introduction to public transit, visiting local parks, library or community events.
Time commitment of 2 hours a week.
Shelter Helper
Volunteers can use their skills at the shelter. This can include light gardening, basic maintenance, grocery shopping for staple items, or running errands.
